Welcome to Different Keys!
I’m Dr Paul Fretwell — a UK-based coach and consultant with a background in music, education, and research, and a lifelong commitment to supporting people who think differently.
Before founding Different Keys, I spent thirty years teaching and mentoring people of all ages — from schoolchildren to retired adults. My academic focus was music: not just how it works, but how it shapes identity, stirs emotion, and connects us to others.
Everything changed in my late forties when I was diagnosed with ADHD. After decades of secretly struggling, I felt huge relief — but also grief, and a painful sense of what might have been different had I known earlier. Around the same time, a close family member was diagnosed with autism, and I began to recognise many of those traits in myself too. This overlap — often called AuDHD — is now a key part of the work I do.
The coaching I received during that period helped me piece things back together. It gave me clarity, confidence, and a renewed sense of direction — so much so that I left academia and took two years out to retrain as a coach.

I believe that real change doesn’t come from trying to become someone else, but from discovering how you work best — and what kind of support truly helps. At Different Keys, I offer a confidential, non-judgemental space where we can explore what really matters to you. I work within the ICF’s ethical guidelines, and as a trained Mental Health First Aider, I’m also happy to talk through other options if coaching turns out not to be the right fit.
Whether you’re here to explore, consider options, or take the next step — you’re warmly invited to get in touch. There’s no pressure, and you don’t have to have everything figured out first.
